Rhetoric Definiton

In my opinion, rhetoric is a language that is used to effectively influence or persuade whoever you are communicating with. There are various steps you need to take in order to think and act rhetorically, and after practicing these steps they will become habits. Once they become habits and you begin thinking and acting rhetorically you will be able to help yourself negotiate throughout life, helping yourself get your point across to people respectfully, and with ease. It will help you persuade others and convince them. While thinking or acting rhetorically, you will need to listen to others, and be willing to accept their opinions with an open mind. You will need to consider why the person ( or people ) believe what they do and understand where they are coming from. You will also need to do the same with yourself, considering what you think and why you believe that. You will need to research your topic, looking at every argument that has been made about that topic, and considering them as well. You will  also need to give credit to others, and acknowledge the work of others and how it influenced you. Giving credit can be done formally or informally, depending on your purpose and context. Using your imagination is a key step in thinking or acting rhetorically, which can lead to new ideas and great insights. The Merriam Webster dictionary describes rhetoric as "the art or skill of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people". This means that while thinking or acting rhetorically, you will possess the ability to effectively convince someone , or persuade them.

  1. Great job Bela! I really love how you focused more on the persuasion part of rhetoric. I mainly pointed out the way people are grounded in their beliefs if they put into action the rhetoric method. Your insights were great and I enjoyed reading:)

  2. I like the way you explained it in general terms of listening and understanding where others come from, I focused mainly on the way it comes across through different languages. Nicely written :-)

  3. I like how you started with "in my opinion" and including a quoted definition from somewhere else. Also, how you wrote it kind of like a summary. Love it(: good job Bela
